  The Battle of Stalingrad The Battle of Stalingrad, fought between August 23, 1942, and February 2, 1943, during World War II, is considered one of the most significant battles in history. It pitted the Axis powers, primarily Germany, against the Soviet Union, with the city of Stalingrad as the epicenter of the conflict. This battle and siege of the city was one of the deadliest battle in World War 2 history, over 1 million casualties on the Soviet Union side alone. The siege/battle raged for approximately five months and in those five months, there was a lot of learn on both side. For the German side, they learned the valuable lesson of to not invade the Soviet Union during the Winter, something that the French learned 130 years prior to the battle. But despite the Soviet Union emerging as victorious, was the 1.2 million death worth the trade? Was Stalin's order to hold the city using all forces available necessary to win the battle?
